The Course
This course is designed to give participants an in depth experience of the Primary series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. There are two basic methods for transmitting this teaching. One is the "Mysore style" method in which students in the class work independently at their own level of proficiency with hands on assistance from one or more teachers. The second method of teaching involves guiding the students through the practice by counting the vinyasa in the traditional Sanskrit. In this course we will have an opportunity to experience these two types of teaching. Particular emphasis will be given to practical "hands on" experience.
The course is appropriate for those who are interested in teaching, those who are currently teaching, as well as students of ashtanga yoga who would like to deepen their knowledge of their own practice.

A total of 100 hours will be spent in training, practice and observation/assisting in classes during this two week period .
Teaching with Your Hands
This section will deal primarily with adjustments. We will learn how to see asanas diagnostically and make anatomically safe, accurate and effective adjustments. We will explore the proper execution of the asanas of the primary series and how to adjust or adapt the poses appropriately for the student.
Teaching with Your Voice
This section will focus on learning how to conduct a class with proper pacing, pronunciation, synchronization of breath and movement, and an economical way of verbally correcting poses based on what is observed.
Yoga Philosophy Pattabhi Jois says that "Ashtanga Yoga is Patanjali Yoga." This part of the course will explore the Yoga Sutras as the philosophical basis of the practice of Ashtanga Yoga. We will examine basic questions like "What is the purpose of yoga?" and "How can we use the technology of yoga to achieve the state of yoga?"
Pranayama and Mantra
This part of the course will explore pranayama as the connecting link between the external and internal practice of yoga. Just as asana is the foundation for pranayama, pranayama is the foundation for working with sound (mantra), which prepares the mind for meditation. We will learn basic techniques of pranayama, and explore sound through mantras, slokas, and bhajans.

Carlsbad Second Series
As we explore the second
series, or Nadi Shodana, we will investigate the inner work
as well as the outer, asking such pertinent questions as:
What is a nadi? How do the nadis relate to the chakras? What
is the "energy body" and what functions do the chakras have
in it? What are the five Pranas and how do they work? What
are the five Koshas and how do we penetrate these layers of
the self?
We will explore pranayama, mantra, devotional singing,
Indian mythology, sacred poetry and archetypal astrology as
tools to facilitate inner transformation. In addition we
will study the sutras from the 3rd and 4th chapters of
Patanjali. Special emphasis will be on how we can use yoga
to liberate ourselves.
